\## Executive Summary

Recent research highlights the challenges faced by large language models (LLMs) when they are constrained or "harnessed" within specific applications. These models often experience a decline in their reasoning capabilities. To address this issue, the researchers developed a system called AutoOnboarder, which seeks to replicate the onboarding process used for training new employees, but applied to LLMs.

AutoOnboarder operates by using an intelligent agent, referred to as the "Onboarder." This system takes a foundational language model and customizes its prompts and underlying code to enhance performance while reducing costs. The approach is akin to how a human trainer would introduce a new employee to their role, providing just a handful of examples rather than extensive training data. This method allows the system to learn and adapt quickly.

The researchers tested AutoOnboarder in a specific context: the submission of genomic-sequencing prior authorization forms. The results from these tests indicate that agents trained through AutoOnboarder can match or even surpass the performance levels of a benchmark model known as Gemini 3.5 Flash, achieving this at costs that are up to 29 times lower. However, it's important to note that while these autonomously onboarded agents show promise, they are not flawless. The effectiveness of the onboarding process can vary significantly, leading to inconsistent performance outcomes.

The study emphasizes the need for a well-structured environment for the Onboarder. This includes having a clear interface for thought processes, controlled access to the internet, and a broad search space for models. These elements are crucial for improving the reliability and effectiveness of future onboarding systems.

This research may have implications for various industries that rely on LLMs for complex tasks, especially in environments where cost efficiency and performance are critical. The findings suggest that organizations could potentially implement similar onboarding systems for their AI applications, leading to more efficient and effective use of language models, particularly in specialized fields like healthcare. However, the variability in performance outcomes highlights the need for careful consideration and further development before widespread adoption.

\## Academic Abstract

Agentic large language models have been documented to lose reasoning capability when placed inside a harness, the software that mediates their observations and actions. To reconcile these losses, we introduce AutoOnboarder, an autonomous system that adapts an agent to a task the way a trainer onboards a new employee. It places the agent under the supervision of an intelligent ``Onboarder'' coding agent, which iteratively tailors its foundation model, prompt, and harness source code to simultaneously improve performance and decrease cost. Like a real onboarding process, the Onboarder is only given tens of examples, and all evaluation data is isolated on a separate virtual machine to prevent leakage. We report the lessons learned from building and testing AutoOnboarder on genomic-sequencing prior authorization form submission. Autonomously onboarded agents are able to match or exceed the performance of a Gemini 3.5 Flash baseline at up to 29$\times$ lower costs. However, these agents remain imperfect, and the Onboarding process varies greatly in terms of final performance. We conclude that future Onboarding systems require a robust environment for the Onboarder, including a structured thought interface, (controlled) internet access, and a wide model search space.
