\## Executive Summary

Foundation4D is a newly developed model aimed at improving various aspects of 3D perception, particularly in the context of driving environments. This model integrates multiple functions, including geometry estimation, 3D object detection, semantic occupancy mapping, and Gaussian reconstruction, all derived from video captured by multiple cameras.

The core of Foundation4D is its shared backbone, which utilizes a specialized method called factorized spatiotemporal attention to efficiently merge observations from different cameras and across time. This approach allows the model to maintain a high level of accuracy while processing complex driving scenes. Additionally, the research includes a video inference pipeline that employs pose graph optimization. This technique refines the paths of the cameras and organizes object tracking over the input video clips, enhancing the overall data quality and reliability.

To support these advancements, the researchers have developed a data annotation pipeline and introduced a new benchmark called PAI-Foundation4D. This benchmark includes detailed depth and semantic occupancy labels for 1,253 driving video clips, providing a valuable resource for testing and validating the model against real-world scenarios.

In terms of performance, Foundation4D has achieved notable results in benchmark tests. It recorded the lowest relative depth error on the Waymo and nuScenes datasets, the highest mean average precision (mAP) for object detection on nuScenes, and the highest mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) for occupancy on OpenOccupancy. These benchmarks indicate that Foundation4D outperforms other methods in critical areas of 3D perception.

The research also explored the advantages of combining tasks, revealing that training the model to detect objects while simultaneously estimating geometry and occupancy can enhance performance. Specifically, this co-training approach improved the top-class mAP by 1.2 points compared to training for detection alone. Additionally, when geometry training was combined with detection, the error related to camera positioning decreased by 13.4% compared to training that focused solely on geometry.

Another key application of Foundation4D is its ability to use the predicted 3D geometry and camera trajectories as foundational data for a lidarless reconstruction method known as NuRec. This capability supports the reconstruction of driving environments for simulations, potentially aiding in the development of autonomous driving technologies and enhancing safety measures in real-world driving scenarios.

The findings from this research are based on benchmarks and simulations rather than direct real-world deployment. However, the advancements presented in Foundation4D could significantly influence the development of more effective and efficient 3D perception systems in the automotive and transportation industries.

\## Academic Abstract

We introduce Foundation4D, a unified feed-forward model for geometry estimation, 3D detection, semantic occupancy, and Gaussian reconstruction from multi-camera driving video. A shared backbone uses factorized spatiotemporal attention to efficiently combine observations across cameras and time. Our video inference pipeline uses pose graph optimization to refine camera trajectories and assembles object tracks across input windows. We also develop a data annotation pipeline and release PAI-Foundation4D, a benchmark with dense depth and semantic occupancy labels for 1,253 driving clips. With benchmark-specific fine-tuning, Foundation4D achieves the lowest depth AbsRel on Waymo and nuScenes, the highest detection mAP on nuScenes, and the highest occupancy mIoU on OpenOccupancy among the compared methods. Our task-combination study shows benefits for both detection and geometry: co-training detection with geometry and occupancy improves top-class mAP by 1.2 points over detection-only training, while co-training geometry with detection reduces camera-to-rig translation error by $13.4\%$ relative to geometry-only training. We further use the predicted geometry and trajectories as priors for lidarless NuRec, supporting reconstruction of driving scenes for simulation.
