\## Executive Summary

GeoDIVE is a new model designed to improve the efficiency of searching for specific objects and patterns in large satellite image collections. This capability is crucial for various sectors, including agriculture, infrastructure planning, environmental monitoring, and disaster response, where the ability to quickly identify relevant features can significantly impact decision-making and operational effectiveness.

The challenge with existing search methods lies in the extensive and varied spatial scales of the data, which can make traditional searching methods costly and inefficient. GeoDIVE addresses this issue by conceptualizing a collection of multiresolution satellite images as a "forest" and employs a strategy known as best-first traversal to select which data tiles to process. This approach allows for a more targeted search, reducing the computational resources needed.

At each stage of the search, GeoDIVE uses a lightweight model to predict the most relevant results hidden within the data. This model provides an optimistic estimate of query similarity based on both the current query and the data being analyzed, streamlining the search process.

In performance evaluations, GeoDIVE demonstrated significant advantages over existing methods. It achieved results comparable to exhaustive searches while using only 10% of the encoding costs for image queries. Furthermore, it outperformed all baseline models across various budget scenarios for both image and text queries.

To facilitate ongoing research and application in geospatial search, the creators of GeoDIVE plan to make their source code and models publicly available. Additionally, they have developed a dataset called Git-10M, which includes object-level image and text queries sourced from Microsoft building footprints and OpenStreetMap polygons, supplemented with captions generated by visual language models.

GeoDIVE could transform how industries approach the retrieval of geospatial data by providing a more efficient and cost-effective search method. By improving the speed and accuracy of identifying relevant spatial features, organizations may enhance their capabilities in critical areas such as disaster response and environmental management.

\## Academic Abstract

Finding specific objects, structures, and spatial patterns supports critical work in agriculture, infrastructure planning, environmental monitoring, and disaster response. These features, however, are often dispersed across very large regions and span dramatically different spatial scales, which defines a search space that is costly to embed, maintain, and search naively. We introduce GeoDIVE, a model that treats a multiresolution satellite image gallery as a forest and uses best-first traversal to determine which tiles to encode. At each visited node, a lightweight model then predicts an optimistic estimate of the best query similarity hidden among its descendants using the query and subtree representations. In evaluations with image and open-vocabulary text queries, GeoDIVE matches exhaustive search at 10% of the encoding cost for image queries and leads all tested baselines at every budget in both modalities. To support future evaluation of multiscale geospatial search, we also release object-level image and text queries for Git-10M, constructed from Microsoft building footprints and OpenStreetMap polygons with VLM-generated captions. Source code and models will be made publicly available.
