\## Executive Summary

The research introduces WeLM-Image, a sophisticated image foundation model designed primarily for applications that involve converting text into images, editing images based on instructions, and synthesizing images using multiple reference points. This model is particularly tailored for deployment on a single GPU, making it suitable for large-scale consumer applications, specifically within WeChat.

WeLM-Image utilizes a unique architecture called Mixture-of-Transformers (MoT). This architecture allows the model to manage both shared attention across different tasks and independent parameters for understanding and generating images. By doing so, it minimizes the interference that typically occurs during the optimization process. Each path within this architecture is enhanced with Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) modules, which enable a sparse activation of its 31.7 billion parameters—activating about 5.4 billion parameters for each image generation task. This design aims to optimize resource use while maintaining performance.

The model's generation capabilities benefit from a sophisticated data engine that integrates a knowledge-based visual vocabulary with extensive visual clustering. This combination is intended to improve semantic accuracy in the generated images and support various editing tasks. The training process is guided by bilingual annotations and supervised editing, which helps refine the model's outputs progressively. Additionally, the model is trained to achieve high-resolution outputs, reaching up to 1500 pixels.

To ensure effective performance in both generation and editing tasks, the researchers applied separate optimization strategies. They used specific rewards based on rubrics and checklists to refine the model's capabilities. These specialized strategies are then unified through a process known as noise-aware on-policy distillation, which helps in consolidating the different training policies into a cohesive model.

In terms of performance, WeLM-Image has demonstrated strong results in benchmark evaluations, ranking first among several open-source models when tested on PRISM-Bench, Qwen-Image-Bench, and UnicBench. The model's efficiency is further highlighted by its faster variant, WeLM-Image-Turbo, which can generate a 1024x1024 pixel image in just under five seconds on a single NVIDIA H20 GPU. This rapid generation time could significantly enhance user experiences in consumer applications that require quick image processing and generation.

The advancements presented in this research are significant for businesses looking to leverage AI for image generation and editing. The efficient architecture and high performance of WeLM-Image could translate into enhanced capabilities for applications in marketing, content creation, and customer engagement, particularly in platforms that rely on visual content.

\## Academic Abstract

We present \textbf{WeLM-Image}, a unified image foundation model that integrates multimodal understanding into text-to-image generation, instruction-guided editing, and multi-reference synthesis. Designed for single-GPU deployment in WeChat's large-scale consumer applications, the model processes text, reference images, and target latents as one interleaved sequence. A Mixture-of-Transformers (MoT) backbone combines shared attention with independent understanding and generation parameters to limit optimization interference. Equipping each path with Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) modules provides sparse capacity, with 31.7B stored parameters and approximately 5.4B generation parameters activated per target latent token. A generation-oriented data engine combines a knowledge-grounded visual vocabulary with large-scale visual clustering to balance semantic coverage and editing tasks, while training-time evaluation guides iterative data refinement. Bilingual annotations and verified editing supervision support progressive training up to native 1.5K resolution. We optimize generation and editing separately with rubric- and checklist-based rewards, then consolidate the specialized policies through noise-aware on-policy distillation. In the reported overall comparisons, the 1536-resolution model ranks first among the evaluated open-source models on PRISM-Bench, Qwen-Image-Bench, and UnicBench. MeanFlow-based few-step distillation yields WeLM-Image-Turbo, which generates a $1024\times1024$ image in 4.98\,s on a single NVIDIA H20 GPU using eight guidance-free steps.
