    Executive Summary

IQuest-Q1 is a new artificial intelligence model designed to enhance performance in coding and general tasks. This model is built using a technique called Mixture-of-Experts (MoE), which allows it to activate only a portion of its total parameters—320 billion in total, with 15 billion being active at any one time. This selective activation helps optimize computational resources while maintaining high performance.

The development of IQuest-Q1 involved a three-stage process. The first stage focused on pre-training the model, which combined several methods to ensure stability and efficiency. This phase used a specialized curriculum that gradually introduced more complex coding data, allowing the model to learn effectively while avoiding instability in its learning process.

In the second stage, the model underwent mid-training. This involved broadening the variety of data types and domains the model was exposed to, which is crucial for improving its versatility. The context in which the model operates was also expanded, enhancing its ability to understand and generate responses in more complex scenarios.

The third stage involved post-training adjustments, where the model was fine-tuned using different methodologies. This included supervised fine-tuning (SFT), domain-specific reinforcement learning, and a multi-objective post-training technique (MOPD). These approaches were used to combine various training signals, which helped to refine the model's coding abilities.

A notable feature of IQuest-Q1 is its model merging capability. This allows different components of the model, known as "experts," to be integrated while minimizing potential conflicts between their updates. This approach helps to create a more cohesive and effective model overall.

IQuest-Q1 is significant because it shows promise in handling both coding tasks and general applications, which could benefit a range of industries looking to integrate AI into their workflows. By releasing IQuest-Q1 as an open-source model, the developers aim to foster community involvement in research and development, potentially leading to further innovations and enhancements in AI capabilities.

The results and capabilities of IQuest-Q1 are based on simulated benchmarks rather than real-world deployments. This means while the model demonstrates strong performance in controlled settings, its effectiveness in practical applications may still require validation through real-world testing.

    Academic Abstract

We present IQuest-Q1, a sparse Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) agentic foundation model with 320B total parameters (15B activated). IQuest-Q1 is developed through a three-stage process: (1) stable and efficient pre-training, combining Stable SplitNorm, Muon, and muP with a two-stage curriculum whose second stage increases the coding-data mixture, preserving a wide stability margin between safe and optimal learning rates; (2) fine-grained mid-training, expanding the data mixture across domains and formats and progressively extending the context; and (3) multi-scaffold with multi-version post-training, combining SFT, domain-specialized RL, and MOPD across various scaffolds to integrate complementary training signals and strengthen agentic coding capabilities. Furthermore, model merging combines different experts and checkpoints from different stages while mitigating conflicts among their parameter updates. The resulting IQuest-Q1 demonstrates capabilities in both coding and general tasks. We release IQuest-Q1 as an open-source model to support community research and development.
