xAI is an artificial intelligence company founded in 2023 by Elon Musk. Its stated mission is to build AI systems that advance human scientific understanding of the universe. The company's flagship product is Grok, a conversational AI assistant integrated with the social platform X and available through standalone apps and a developer API. xAI builds large language models and multimodal systems, and trains them on an in-house GPU supercomputing cluster known as Colossus, located in Memphis, Tennessee. It competes with companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind. xAI was started by Musk alongside researchers previously affiliated with organizations including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and the University of Toronto, and in 2025 it combined operations with the social network X. Based in Palo Alto, California, xAI develops AI products for consumers, developers, and enterprises.
